Starting out as a one man band consulting company, Codeminers was founded by Simon Proctor in 2011 and is now a collective of super talented developers and designers located in the heart of the East Midlands. Seeing massive growth through the changing market, Codeminers has come a long way in a short period of time.
Taking on technical projects and becoming a strategic partner to clients, each day at Codeminers is very different. Discover a bit more about the man behind the brand, as we talk to the Codeminers’ founder, Simon Proctor.
Q. How and why did you start up Codeminers?
Codeminers was born out of the demand for specialist software and consultancy I saw in the market. I had been working as a Technical Architect for a Digital Agency and decided to strike out on my own in order to offer a more personal service to clients.
Q. What kind of work does Codeminers do?
We work closely with large enterprises and SMEs to consult on their technical builds for websites and mobile platforms.
Working as a strategic partner to our clients as opposed to an external consultant, we help to bridge the gap with technical expertise in order deliver their key projects within their allocated budgets and timescales.
Q. What is the best part of being an entrepreneur?
I enjoy building relationships with our clients, and I like to help them explore the potential for their upcoming projects and technical needs. Building these relationships is really important to our business, so that our clients can build trust in us and understand where their budget is going and why.
Without this kind of trust, a partnership cannot work as well as it should to meet the desired objectives. When I was working for agencies the aim was very often skewed towards cost-savings, and very often that meant cutting corners, which I’ve never done and would never be okay with. As an owner of my own agency I make the rules – and that means ensuring corners are never cut and we only deliver the best technical solutions to our clients at the best possible cost.
Q. As a business owner, what’s the best advice you’ve received?
The best advice I’ve received was actually something I read in a book a few years ago: ‘You’ve come so far, why stop now?’ Every time I’ve ever had doubts or wondered about whether I was doing the right thing, I’d ask myself this question and I’ve never been able to find a reason to stop!
Also, being a martial artist, I follow the philosophy that you ‘fall down seven times stand up eight’.
Q. What advice would you give someone just starting out in the tech industry?
Whatever you choose to do, do it because you enjoy it. It needn’t be your passion but you need to enjoy it. There’s so much information out there now so it’s a lot easier to skill up, but that can also be a problem because it can be hard to know where to start.
So start with what you enjoy, then work on getting paid for it!
Q. What’s next for Codeminers?
We’re really focusing on growth right now. We’re building up our client base, taking on more staff, building new partnerships and getting involved in some really exciting projects. We’re really looking forward to getting into the nitty gritty of some of our upcoming technical builds, as well as helping our clients develop solutions to some of their trickiest website and IT problems.
